This week we went deep on Embedded Software Engineering. 64,096 engineers across 176 companies in our talent mapping — the largest of the five weekly disciplines, and by far the most spread-out.

Where recruiter instinct says "Hardware & Semiconductor," the actual pool tells a different story: five industries hold more than 10% of the engineers each. Hardware & Semi (24.6%, 15,796 engineers · 41 companies), E-commerce & Retail Tech (23.1%, 14,786 engineers — in just one hyperscale company), Telecoms & Networking (16.0%, 10,244 engineers · 13 companies), Software & Digital Platforms (14.4%, 9,201 engineers · 41 companies), Aerospace & Defence (14.2%, 9,124 engineers · 39 companies).

"Embedded" isn't a sector search — it's a work-type search. Firmware, kernel, RTOS, robotics: same skill genus, different industry rooms.

And demand is real: 10 companies competing for 14 live embedded roles right now — Apple (3 roles), Graphcore and MBDA (2 each), plus Navantia UK, Fractile, Leonardo, Spire, Mycronic, Microchip and Naim Audio. Computer hardware, defence, semi, shipbuilding, audio: the spread of hirers mirrors the spread of the talent pool.

We read the skills across all 176 parent companies. They point straight at which sub-craft a role really is:

  • C++ — 54% of companies, and C — 39%. The core embedded language pair. High prevalence signals classic firmware / systems-embedded work; drill into Firmware Engineer for the board-close-metal end.
  • Embedded Systems — 50%, Embedded Software Development — 33%, and Embedded Systems Design — 28%. Self-declared embedded work — the parent lookup is the right lens here.
  • Python — 30%. Higher than expected for embedded — signals build-tooling, test automation, and increasingly ML-at-the-edge work sitting inside the discipline.
