What we saw this week

This week we went deep on Systems Engineering. 143,240 engineers across 76 companies — the second-largest discipline in the roster, but with a shape completely different from Embedded's spread.

Aerospace & Defence holds 55% of the pool (78,891 engineers across 29 companies), Hardware & Semiconductor is a distant #2 at 22%, and IT Services & Consulting third at 10%. It's the sharpest sector concentration in the whole 5-craft roster.

Systems Engineering isn't a work-type — it's a ceremony. Requirements, SysML, DOORS, verification, sign-off. It lives where safety-critical engineering has budgets.

The pool concentrates for a reason: SysML at 22%, DOORS at 20%, Requirements Engineering at 37% — these are the tells of certified safety-critical work (defence, aerospace, medical, automotive functional safety). Where Embedded is a work-type that touches everywhere, Systems Engineering is a discipline that anchors where the standards live.

The two engineering worlds Systems bridges

Systems is an integration discipline — it sits between hardware and software, so its own market lives around the two other canonical crafts this discipline touches. Both have their own /lookup pages, and both are sub-craft markets a Systems recruiter should know:

We read the skills across all 76 parent companies. They point straight at the defence-integration reality:

  • Systems Engineering — 66%, and Systems Architecture — 39%. The discipline's core self-declaration. Two-thirds of mapped companies want the meta-skill.
  • Requirements Engineering — 37%, and DOORS — 20%. The requirements-management pair. High prevalence here is the defence/aerospace tell — DOORS is ubiquitous in certified safety-critical work.
  • SysML — 22%. The modelling-language signal. SysML sits at the heart of Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE); high prevalence signals architecture-heavy roles.
  • System Integration — 17%. Where Systems Architecture is upstream, System Integration is downstream — the two-thirds/one-sixth split shows most parent companies are architecture-first.
  • Watch this space: if a JD leans on kernel/firmware/RTOS work → the actual pool sits in Embedded Software Engineer. If it reaches into hardware/board architecture → Hardware Engineer.

Ask the hiring manager one question — does this role have a formal V-model, DO-178C / DO-254 / ISO 26262 / IEC 62304 lifecycle? If yes, you're inside the defence-aerospace-medical-automotive-functional-safety block — 55% of the mapped pool sits here, and DOORS + SysML + Requirements Engineering are your filters. If no, the role is likely more architecture-integration flavoured — look for Systems Architecture + System Integration + adjacent Hardware or Embedded roleSpecs.
