Kernel Work Inverts Everything

This week we went deep on Kernel/OS Engineering. 31,076 engineers across 70 companies — mid-sized against the roster. But the shape is unlike anything else we've mapped this cycle.

Hardware & Semiconductor holds 55.6% of the engineers (17,278) in just 13 companies (18.6% of the mapped set). Silicon giants concentrate the pool. Software & Digital Platforms flips it — 23.6% of the engineers (7,342) across 39 companies (55.7% of the set). Wide breadth, thinner depth. Telecoms & Networking third at 13.9% (4,330 engineers, 9 companies) — the historical Linux-kernel hiring stronghold.

The sub-crafts tell two different stories — Compiler Engineer is a substantially larger adjacent pool (60K engineers in 29 companies), while GPU Kernel Engineer is sharply concentrated (6K in 9). Match the sub-craft to the work; the parent lookup is the door, the sub-craft is the sharper focus.

We read the skills across all 70 parent companies. They point straight at which sub-craft a role really is:

• Kernel Engineering — 90% of companies. The discipline's core self-declaration; nearly universal.
• Linux — 53%, Linux Kernel — 23%, and C — 39%. The classic Linux-kernel triad — the "OS-close" tell. Most parent roles are Linux-centric.
• Memory Management — 24%. The systems-close specialty signal. Combined with kernel + Linux, it signals driver, allocator, or scheduler work.
• Assembly — 20%. The low-level-close signal — sits alongside the C majority, points at boot code, register-level drivers, and hardware-close kernel work.
• Watch this space: if a JD is GPU-driver, CUDA, or graphics-stack work → source from GPU Kernel Engineer (9 companies, 6K engineers — small and sharp). If it's compiler / LLVM / toolchain work → Compiler Engineer (29 companies, 60K — a substantially larger adjacent pool).

Match the sub-craft to the work; then filter the sub-craft by industry.

Ask the hiring manager two questions:

Demand is real and concentrated: 7 companies competing for 8 live Kernel/OS roles this week — Apple (2 roles), plus Navantia UK, Graphcore, Mycronic, Microchip, Thales, MBDA (1 each). Same hirer roster as this cycle's Embedded week — kernel work sits inside the same demand set, but the roles are systems-software rather than firmware.

Under-the-radar tip: Telecoms & Networking holds 4,330 engineers across 9 companies (13.9% of the pool). Historically the Linux-kernel hiring stronghold (network drivers, DPDK, packet processing), often overlooked when recruiters default to silicon or software sourcing.
