What we saw this week

This week we went deep on Kernel/OS Engineering. 31,076 engineers across 70 companies — mid-sized against the roster. But the shape is unlike anything else we've mapped this cycle.

Hardware & Semiconductor holds 55.6% of the engineers (17,278) in just 13 companies (18.6% of the mapped set). Silicon giants concentrate the pool. Software & Digital Platforms flips it — 23.6% of the engineers (7,342) across 39 companies (55.7% of the set). Wide breadth, thinner depth. Telecoms & Networking third at 13.9% (4,330 engineers, 9 companies) — the historical Linux-kernel hiring stronghold.

Kernel work concentrates at the silicon end. A "Kernel Engineer" search filtered to Software companies casts wide and shallow; filtered to Hardware & Semi casts narrow and deep.

The sub-crafts tell two different stories — Compiler Engineer is a substantially larger adjacent pool (60K engineers in 29 companies), while GPU Kernel Engineer is sharply concentrated (6K in 9). Match the sub-craft to the work; the parent lookup is the door, the sub-craft is the sharper focus.

We read the skills across all 70 parent companies. They point straight at which sub-craft a role really is:

  • Kernel Engineering — 90% of companies. The discipline's core self-declaration; nearly universal.
  • Linux — 53%, Linux Kernel — 23%, and C — 39%. The classic Linux-kernel triad — the "OS-close" tell. Most parent roles are Linux-centric.
  • Memory Management — 24%. The systems-close specialty signal. Combined with kernel + Linux, it signals driver, allocator, or scheduler work.
