What we saw this week

This week we went deep on Hardware Engineering. 20,241 engineers across 70 companies — mid-sized against the roster. But the top-line hides where the talent really sits.

Hardware & Semiconductor holds 62.4% of the pool (12,629 engineers) in just 28 companies. Silicon vendors concentrate the majority — this is where PCIe / DDR / high-speed digital validation lives. Aerospace & Defense #2 at 15.1% (3,049 engineers, 23 companies) — the surprise second. IT Services & Consulting #3 at 12.1% (2,458 engineers across just 6 companies) — wide-and-thin: a small handful of large IT-services shops. Automotive & Mobility (3.4%) and Energy & Industrial (3.3%) round out the top five with distinct specialisms (ISO 26262, industrial ruggedisation).

Hardware Engineer isn't a work-type — it's a venue. The sector chooses the work. Ask the sector first; then filter by the skill signal that goes with it.

But those percentages are averaged across ALL 70 companies. Inside each sector, the mix shifts dramatically — silicon companies skew Hardware Design, defence companies skew Systems Engineering, IT-services companies skew Embedded. The sub-craft breakdown isn't wrong — it's just the wrong LENS for sourcing this parent. Sector is the sharper lens.

  • PCB Design — 53% of companies. Altium — 31%. The board-design pair — schematic capture, PCB layout, component selection, lab bring-up. High prevalence signals traditional hardware roles.
  • Hardware Engineering — 34%. The discipline's self-declaration. Under-cited relative to Systems Engineering (72% in that pool) — hardware people describe themselves by the specific work more than by the meta-craft.
  • Analog Circuit Design — 26%. When present, it flags roles doing signal-integrity or mixed-signal work — sourcing goes deeper via /lookup/digital-design-engineer and specialised analog listings.
  • Firmware — 24%, Digital Design — 24%. The hardware-close software + logic pair. Together they signal roles that reach into firmware or RTL — those recruit from adjacent canonicals (Embedded Software + Digital Design) as well as Hardware Engineer.
