There's no talent shortage. There's an intelligence shortage. We mapped 18,948 hardware engineers across 85 companies. Eight weeks ago we said hardware splits by sector not sub-craft (edition 018). Loop-3's finding goes one layer deeper: the day-to-day work is PCB design. More companies demand PCB than ask for "Hardware Engineering" by name, and Altium (the industry-standard EDA tool) is the third-most-demanded skill at 32%.
What this means for your search: stop filtering by title alone. "Hardware Engineer" is self-declared by candidates who did PCB-primary, PCB-adjacent, FPGA, firmware or RF work — all under one umbrella. Filter by PCB Design + Altium presence and you shortlist the practitioner core; filter by Hardware Engineering alone and you shortlist the broader "did some hardware" cohort.
Each is the share of the 85 mapped companies that ask for the skill. The 54% / 36% gap between "PCB Design" (what companies demand) and "Hardware Engineering" (what candidates self-declare) is the whole story — the tool IS the role.
Live advert count for Hardware Engineering is often quiet on public boards — silicon-vendor hiring is routed through internal pipelines; defence-prime hiring is routed through cleared channels. The deep pool is in the 30 Hardware/Semi firms + 24 A&D firms regardless of this week's public demand. The 8 IT Services firms (13.2% of the pool, ~370 engineers each) are PCB design consultancies that ship services into the silicon + A&D firms — if you can't find an in-house hire, that's where PCB talent flows between roles. (Live named hirers are re-pulled Monday morning; if the advert count is 0, we present the context — this is a cycle-timing issue, not a dry market.)
Then search by the tool chain, not the title. Any profile that cites PCB Design + Altium + (FPGA or Firmware or Embedded) is a candidate. A profile with just "Hardware Engineering" and no tool-chain evidence is tool-chain-light.
From 137 evaluated. The small great-fit cohort (31) is by design — we filter FOR the tool chain. A candidate who self-declares "hardware engineering" but doesn't demonstrate PCB Design + Altium presence is strong-fit at best. The 165 strong-fits are a credible pipeline; the 31 are the "interview tomorrow" set. That's the trade-off the craft demands.
